People rarely try to pick me up. Perhaps it’s my sarcasm, or my really loud voice, or the wedding band on my finger.  In truth, I had to make the first move to grab my now husband’s attention.

We’d been friends in high school and had spent a summer before college hanging around each other every single day. It was obvious we liked each other, but the friendship was so strong I didn’t want to screw it up but pushing for anything more. I’m sure he felt the same way…maybe?

Anyway, it was now August and as much as friendship is great, I wanted a bit more. I’m sure he did too, but was bashful.  So to make a long rambling story shorter and less rambling, I asked him for some Chapstick after he’d put some on (he was a hunky lifeguard and needed to protect his skin). Instead of taking it from his hands, I took it from his lips with my own lips. Things progressed very well after that!

Taking his own sweet time in everything he does, we married seven years later and will be together over twenty years on our anniversary.

Her newest release co-written with Susan Scott Shelley is Simmering Ice.

When the gloves come off, she’s worth the penalty…

Physical therapist Annie Davidson is great at her job but unlucky when it comes to love. She’s just out of a bad relationship. A
really bad relationship. All she can do is focus on work…that is until she runs into professional hockey player Alec O’Meara. She’s a touch insecure and doesn’t understand why he’s interested in her.
Despite being one of the biggest players on the team, right wing Alec O’Meara prefers finesse over force. After the tragic death of his wife, he likes to keep things loose on and off the ice. But the red-headed Annie challenges his beliefs and makes him think about taking their relationship to the net.
The passion and fun they share is addicting and makes them long for more. But her insecurities that she’s not good enough, and his anxiety over a long-term commitment will keep them apart, unless they can find a way to break through the defenses they’ve built around their hearts.

    Samantha Ann King

Thanks for hosting me today and for participating in the Summer eReader Giveaway. I’m looking forward to chatting with everyone about the best and worst pickup lines they’ve heard…or used! Especially since I don’t have much experience with them. It’s true. I can only remember one from all my years of dating. I don’t know what that says about me. That I led a sheltered life? That no one wanted to pick me up? That my memory sucks?

My heroes don’t use pickup lines, either. They tend to have a friendship with the heroines before they fall in love, or they’re thrown together by circumstance.
But back to my one and only experience with the pickup line.
Imagine a bar. It’s in a college town, so it’s crowded with students. Dancing. Drinking. Shouting above the pulsing, pounding bass of the sound system.
I’m standing at a table, taking a break from the dance floor with my drink of choice, a G&T. Don’t ask what kind of gin. I wasn’t particular back then, couldn’t afford to be. Probably couldn’t afford to be drinking. But it was Saturday night.
A guy—dark curly hair, dark eyes, a little older—asks me to dance with him. And since that’s why I’m there…
When we return to the table, he raises his voice above the music. “I wrote a song about you.”
    I laugh. “Yeah. Right.”
“I’m a musician. I’m in a band. Used to play with (insert your favorite rock musician here, because for the life of me I can’t remember the artist.).”
“Sing it for me,” I say.
    “Too loud.”
We talk. Dance a little more. He walks me to my car.
    “Sing it for me.”
“Not now. Let’s go to dinner tomorrow. I’ll bring my guitar.”
I say, “Okay.” (In my defense, I was young and naïve. Besides, I really wanted to believe he’d written a song about me. I mean, how cool would that be?!)
At dinner we talk. He and the waiter compare notes on how to cook baked potatoes. (I know. Weird, right?)
When he takes me home, I say, “Sing me the song.”
“I forgot my guitar. Next weekend.” (I wasn’t that naïve or that desperate for a song of my own!)
Unfortunately, I can’t come up with an excuse quickly enough. I’ve never been fast on my feet, literally or figuratively. We make another date. A messy cold causes me to cancel the day of. (The only time I’ve been thankful for a cold.)
I’m sprawled on the nubby plaid couch in my apartment. Red, runny nose. A box of tissues clamped in one hand and an overflowing trash can within reach of the other.
There’s a knock on the door. My roommate answers.
It’s him. “You really are sick.”
    “Uh, yeah.”
    “I thought you were lying.”
Such a charmer. I never heard from him again, and I never got to hear “my” song. I wasn’t crushed.
Sooo, “I wrote a song about you.” Memorable? Yes. It’s the only line I remember a guy using on me. (Probably because it was the only line a guy ever used on me.) Best or worst? I’ll let you decide.
I’d love to hear your best or worst pickup line. Share it here, and you could win one of four Kindles. In the meantime, if you’d like to see how a real man picks up a woman, check out Sharing Hailey, the first book in my Lovers and Friends series. No pickup line needed.
    Sharing Hailey
Hailey Anderson’s deep, dark secret? She’s been madly in lust with her overprotective brother’s two best friends for years. Gorgeous woodworking artist Mark Allen and sexy doctor Tony Adamo have no idea they star in her fantasies every night.
After a nasty breakup with her abusive boyfriend, Hailey’s looking for a little distance. Headed for a two-week Hawaiian vacation with her brother and his hot friends, Hailey can’t wait to feast her eyes on Mark’s and Tony’s rock-hard, ocean-slick bodies. Even if she can’t touch.
But instead of treating her like their little sister, Mark and Tony have a surprising proposition: a monogamous ménage à trois. The three of them—and no one else. Both men want Hailey and have agreed to share her. The red-hot reality is even better than the forbidden fantasy. Until Hailey’s ex threatens their newfound happiness…

    My Reviews

Forget Me Knot – This is the first in a new series by this wonderful storyteller, Lori King. If you have never read one of Lori’s books before, give this one a try. Abe and Sera Crawley couldn’t have kids themselves, so they did a truly unselfish thing, they took in foster children. This is only brief minutes of the book, however, without that one moment of them deciding to foster, we wouldn’t have the men who now run Crawley Creek Ranch. Each have a heart breaking story, of how they arrived there, but they stayed there because it was the one safe place they every knew. Drannon came there when his mom died. Like any child, he left the ranch to make it on his one. When he stumbled, he always had a home to come back to.

Lacy never knew her mother, and her father never really got over her mother enough to put enough into her. It sad that she lost one parent, yet not really having the other in a different way. When she loses her job, she decides to go do the one thing she always want to do…..ride a horse.

The chemistry between Drannon and Lacy is instantaneous. You could almost see it was so strong. He is a cowboy through and through, but for Lacy, he can be as tender as a filet mignon.

I really enjoyed this story, and I look forward to the next installment.

Rough Ride Romeo – Who know running over a poor defenseless motorcycle would be one of the best things Romeo could have ever done! Franki was in town to find her sister. Tired and afraid the last thing she needed was for her only mode of transportation to be taken from her.

Taking the bike home for one of his brother’s to fix, Romeo did the one thing that Crawley Creek was known for, he took in someone in need. Franki quickly finds herself seriously attracted to Romeo and vice versa. Determined to find her sister, she confides in Roman and together they will do anything to help her.

This books is funny in one moment, extremely hot in another, and so sad in another that you will have tears in your eyes. Franki and Romeo are definitely two halves of one soul. Made for each other.

Lacy Denvers has lost her job, and lost her way. All she wants to do now is get her career back on track and find some stability again, but first, she wants to mark something off her bucket list: She wants to learn to ride a horse. Her dream vacation to the Crawley Creek Cattle Ranch turns into a lesson in patience when the North Dakota winter proves unpredictable as ever. Wrapped in a cocoon of snow, Lacy finds the ranch to be a hidden treasure trove of cowboy eye candy, and her mouth is watering even as her brain is telling her to run.

After a devastating tragedy, a young Drannon Russo ended up fostering with the Crawley family, and found a home. He’s only moved away once and had to lean on family for support when his dreams were shattered. Being a cowboy on a ranch is a pretty lonely existence. When a beautiful redhead shows up looking for a fresh start he’s determined to give them both what they want.

Will this vacation into the heart of cattle country turn out to be a mistake, or will Lacy and Drannon find their future in each other?

Cowboys don’t cry, but Roman “Romeo” Freemont certainly has enough tragic history to spend his days teary-eyed. Instead he’s turned to women and liquor in an effort to soothe his aches and pains, but when a petite brunette with a feisty temper comes crashing into his world, he realizes what he’s been missing.

Francesca “Franki” Scott has walked through fire herself. Nowadays she just isn’t a people person, and she’s definitely not interested in a wannabe playboy ranch owner either. She has a mission and it could mean life or death for someone close to her if she gets distracted.

Closing the gap between these two wounded souls could mean surviving yet another tragedy. Will their determination to hide their pain from themselves be their downfall, or will they come through this rough ride together?

Patty BlountMY WORST PICK-UP LINE EXPERIENCE
    by Patty Blount

Hello! I’m Patty Blount, author of young adult and contemporary romance novels. But I also have a fulltime job in IT in addition to my writing career. IT stands for Information Technology. It used to be the computer department, but as technology advanced, so did the term. My job is to write the instruction guides people need in order to correctly use their computer systems. I’ve been doing this work for about twenty years now, so in a very real sense, I’ve watched the industry grow up.

When I was just starting out, Windows hadn’t been born yet and the internet was still reserved for government or scientific use. It was also a man’s world – still is, to a large extent – but most of these guys were Big Bang Theory characters and not exactly the stuff of romance novels.  Until now.

In A Match Made at Christmas, my first contemporary romance, I thought it would be cool to make geekiness a hot and heroic character trait, so I gave my heroine my day job and made the hero an executive in the same field. Here is a passage from the story based on actual pickup lines once used on me. In this scene, hero Lucas is quite attracted to heroine Elena, but trying to play it cool. Except his friends, Al and Debbie, won’t leave him alone.

“Oh, you’re in IT, too?” Al’s grin got wide and just a little bit wicked. “Luke’s head of development at Burke & Kirk. Lucas, you have to try out some of those software developer pick-up lines on someone who gets them.”

    “No.”

Elena’s lips twitched and she groaned just for form. Inside, she was grateful for the change of subject. “Okay. Gimme one. Let’s see what you got.”

    “No.”

“Come on, Luke! Don’t be such a dick.” Al elbowed him.

“No. And don’t call me a dick.”

“Please? I want to hear these, too.” Debbie patted the table between them.

“Okay, okay. You asked for it.” Luke rubbed his hands together and gave Elena a smoldering look, dropped his voice down an octave. “I hope you’re broadband, baby, because I really want high-speed access.” He wiggled his eyebrows.

Elena rolled her eyes. “That’s terrible.”

“Yeah, man, that was awful,” Al agreed.

    “I warned you.”

“Come on, do another one,” Debbie said.

Elena put out a hand. “Please don’t use the obvious puns on RAM or motherboards.”

Lucas looked at her sideways. “Please. This isn’t my first program.”

She snorted and let him continue. Luke took her hand and leaned in real close. “Baby, you overclock my processor but trust me, there’s no part of my body that’s micro or soft.” He delivered the final words with his eyes locked on hers.

Elena stared into his dark eyes and felt herself melting, weakening, and might have leaned over the table to fuse her mouth to his…

What do you think? Is this a hot geek? I will admit these lines made me giggle but, no – they did not work on me!

The sequel to A Match Made at Christmas was released on June 30th. It’s called His Touch and is about Elena’s sister, Kara, and her second chance at love. I also have a new young adult novel coming out in August called NOTHING LEFT TO BURN. It’s about a boy named Reece who joins the fire department’s junior squad to win his father’s respect. Pre-order today.

    NLTB cover- Patty BlountDear Dad,

I promised Matt I’d do this-become a Junior Cadet. That I wouldn’t let you break me down. I know you hate me. Blame me for everything you lost. But that day I lost my brother and my dad. You could never be proud of me, could you? I was too “different.” So, just in case you haven’t figured it out yet, I’m saying goodbye. Maybe someday, you’ll miss me.

    ~Reece

Reece’s words make her ache. Amanda understands wanting to belong. As a foster kid, the firehouse where she volunteers is the only place that feels like home. She wants to help Reece, but his dad is her boss. And she won’t risk her place as a Junior Cadet-it’s all that she has. But when a string of arsons suddenly point to Amanda, her whole world is about to go up in flames. And the only way to save themselves is to risk getting burned.

Patty Blount is the award-winning author of Some Boys, TMI, and SEND, plus contemporary romances from Tule Group. She lives on Long Island with her family and lots of books. Tweet her @pattyblount or visit her website pattyblount.com to read book excerpts.

    SarahMY WORST PICK-UP LINE EXPERIENCE
    by Sarah Castille

Once upon a time, there was a Canadian girl who lived in London. One fine summer day, she put on her riding leathers and hopped on the back of her boyfriend’s motorcycle and they took a drive through the city to a quaint pub in the East End of London. While her boyfriend tended to the motorcycle, she went into the pub to buy a couple of pints.

The pub was unlike anything the Canadian girl had ever seen. Dark and dank, with a low ceiling, crooked floors, dark wooden beams, a roaring fire in a massive stone fireplace and a worn, polished bar at least fifteen feet long. A lazy hound with gastric problems lay on a braided rug in the middle of the pub, adding a distinctive aroma to the already pungent scent of yeast and stale beer.

Several grizzled old men played cards at a table in one corner. An elderly couple dozed in front of the fire. And a group of guys sat at the bar chatting up the female bartender who sported multiple facial piercings and two full sleeves of tattoos.

The Canadian girl slid onto the last seat at the bar and asked the bartender for a pint. Almost immediately, one of the guys broke away from the group. Tall and broad, with a chiselled jaw, shaved head and a pillowy abdomen, he approached her with slow, measured steps. His piercing blue eyes slid over her leather-clad body like a soft caress, lingering over the swell of her breasts crushed beneath her tight leather jacket. He leaned into her, his voice low and husky.

“You’re so Peas in a Pot I could Tu’penny Post me meat on ya, Basin Of Gravy.”

Very eloquently, and in her best Canadian, she said, “Eh?’

With a sympathetic smile, he drew closer, his fetid breath a whisper in her ear. “You don’t have any Cockney in ya, luv?”

    “No.”

    “Do you want some?”

“Sorry,” she said, inwardly cringing at the worst pick-up line ever. “I only ride Canadian.”

    BeyondTheCut

My latest release is Beyond the Cut, the second standalone book in the Sinner’s Tribe Motorcycle Club series. • Unobtainable by Jennifer Rose

    My Review

Dyson works with his brothers at their Grandfather’s company.  One day his brother, EJ, introduces him to one of their new employees, Harley.  One look at Harley and Dyson is Gobsmacked!  He is so turned around by him, he runs right into the door frame and gives himself a bloody nose!

Meeting Dyson was like a lightening strike that threatened to start his deadened heart.  Harley wanted to go help him with his nose but kept himself back.

In his grandfather’s Will, his grandfather says that Dyson must marry or not be a partner in the company with his brothers.  He has six months.  With only days left, Harley agrees to marry him for the six months required then they will separate.

Love, Lust, Desire, Betrayal, Blackmail …..I can go on and on with what is contained in this book, however, that would necessitate a thesaurus and a dictionary.  I have one criticism, and that is there is so much to this book, that it could have really been two.  There are two or even three amazing stories involving Dyson and Harley.  1 is their coupling.  2. is Harley’s mom and past.  #3 is Bruno if not dealt within #2.

Other than that, I can’t say that I had any issues.  I enjoyed my reading.  Took me two days because of the holiday, but I was glued to the book.  I look forward to reading more from Ms. Rose.

     Synopsis

My name is Dyson Michaels and my life got flipped upside down the day my grandfather passed away and in his ultimate wisdom, he chose to mess with my life from beyond the grave.

    ~Six months prior~

“…therefore, in layman’s terms, unless you are married by July 18th, and within five years produce an heir, your portion of your grandfather’s estate and shares will be divided equally between your three siblings. You will inherit nothing.

If you marry but do not produce an heir, your shares will be divided among your siblings.  If you do not wed by said date, you may if you should so choose to, keep your position with your grandfather’s company and draw a salary.       About the Author

Jennifer Rose lives the glamorous life in Canada working as a part-time office clerk/manager. A mother of three grown boys, she decided to give up cleaning, cooking and day to day household chores in favor of sitting with a favorite beverage, be it coffee or wine and her trusty laptop, after a friend and author convinced her that she had what it took to write romance novels, so she took a creative writing course and finally started writing.
